Host Country Studies

Turkish Language and Culture (TLC) is an integral part of the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP).

TLC in the PYP classroom extends beyond the classroom walls. The programme provides students with a cross-cultural focus, and Turkish language skills  to develop an appreciation and understanding of both the culture and language of the host country, Turkey.

Studying the products, practices, and perspectives of a particular country and culture  brings the student closer to understanding how the people of that culture think and  develops an appreciation of differences.  By studying its history, geography, language, traditions, arts, literature and daily life, students develop their understanding of the people and culture of Turkey. They also learn about the culture through sharing their experiences with each other.

The host country language, Turkish, is important for the daily lives of our students as they communicate their needs, make friends and understand the community they live in. Throughout the integrated units of inquiry; students engage in research and discussion to develop their understanding. Thus, students learn language skills in a relevant and authentic context. This learning is then shared in a variety of ways, including but not limited to, role plays, presentations, posters and short movies.
