Assistant General Manager

Elvan Tongal is the Assistant General Manager of MEF Schools. She has 30 years of professional experience, including 15 years of administrative roles. She worked as a History Teacher in many private schools, notably the Founding Director of SEV American College. Specializing in IB Diploma Program, Ms. Tongal has been the IB Workshop Leader since 2013. She has been also working as a part-time instructor at the Teachers’ Academy Foundation (ÖRAV) since 2010. She has taken part in important projects such as ‘Sabancı University Alternative History Book Writing’, ‘No Teaching Limit’ and ‘Digital European Union: Turkish E-Book for High School and Primary School students. A graduate of Marmara University, Department of History, Ms. Tongal holds Sabancı University Alternative History Books and Bahçeşehir University Education Management and Supervision Master’s degrees. Elvan Tongal is a digital immigrant and a hopeful traveler on the path to learning.

Principal

Sharlene Carki is the principal for MEF International School Istanbul campus. She came to Istanbul from New Zealand where she has held administrative roles for the past 10 years and taught across all year levels in her 23 years as an educator. Sharlene first came to Turkey 20 years ago where she met her husband. They have two daughters who attend MEF IS and this is their third year as part of the MEF IS family. Sharlene enjoys exploring Istanbul with her family and travelling to new destinations. Sharlene graduated from The University of Otago and College of Education with a Bachelor of Education and Diploma of Teaching. She has also completed a postgraduate certificate in Digital and Collaborative Learning. Sharlene trained as a reading specialist and has extensive training in leadership, differentiated programmes, Specialist Learning Support and 21st learning development. Sharlene strives for excellence in all that she does and believes that quality relationships, collaboration and good communication are vital to success. Sharlene looks forward to working with the talented staff at MEF IS and to support the wonderful teaching and learning that challenges, inspires and nurtures our students. She believes that MEF IS offers students an opportunity to fulfill their unique potential and to be a part of a truly International Community.

Primary School Deputy Principal

Daniel is the Primary Deputy Principal and Designated Safeguarding Lead of MEF International School. He moved to Istanbul this academic year with his wife. He was previously at an international school in South Korea for 5 years, during which time he earned a master’s degree in Educational Leadership & Management through the European University Cyprus and led the school through many exciting developments in his role as whole school Vice Principal. Before that he was a teacher in the United Kingdom, having qualified via a PGCE at the University of Southampton and a bachelor’s degree in Educational Studies & Music at Keele University. During this time he held positions of Art and History leader and played in various bands and orchestras in his free time. Daniel also spent time working as an English teacher in Korea when he was younger. Daniel sees learning as an adventure and enjoys creating effective systems for teachers and learners to achieve their very best within an innovative school culture. In his free time, Daniel enjoys reading about history and culture and travelling to a myriad of places to learn even more.

Secondary School Deputy Principal

Nicole Incel is the Secondary Deputy Principal of Istanbul MEF International School. She has lived in Turkey for 9 years. She has two sons who also attend MEF IS. She has a B.A. in History and Education from Loyola University of Chicago and an M.A. degree in TESL and Linguistics from Northeastern University of Chicago. Nicole has been working in education for 17 years, nine of which have been at MEF IS. In past years, she has taught History, Humanities, Language Arts, and English Language Learners. She has also been the Student Support Team leader for the past 7 years at MEF IS. She was also the accreditation chair for MEF IS. Nicole is a firm believer that all students are capable of learning anything with the right tools and strives to support teachers with providing these tools to their students. She also believes MEF IS has a great community who always supports one another. Nicole is interested in educational history, politics, and differentiated learning. In her free time, she enjoys spending quality time with her family and exploring different parts of Turkey and the world.

IB Programmes Coordinator

Seden Chouseinoglou is the IB Programs Coordinator of MEF Schools. She has completed her Bachelor’s degree in the English Teaching Department at METU and started teaching at Ankara University’s Language Center in 1996. She continued her professional life at Beykent Schools for many years and took on different roles; such as, Teacher of English, Foreign Language and International Projects Coordinator, International Baccalaureate Programs and Institutional Academic Coordinator, and more. She has taken an active role during both the authorization and evaluation processes of six IB programs at Beykent Schools. She worked for The European Union Education and Youth Programs Center as a program guide.  She coordinated many European Union education projects and  had the opportunity to examine closely the different educational systems in Europe. Seden Chouseinoglou has also been serving as a MYP, DP and Continuum Workshop Leader for 6 years in Africa, Europe and in the Middle East Region for the IB Organization. She believes that education is a lifetime process and identifies her own professional vision with the lifelong learning philosophy of IB programs.

IB PYP Coordinator

Darren Richardson was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia. His passion for travelling and learning about a wide variety of cultures began as a student. This included attending high school in both New Zealand and Japan. He has an honours degree in Science with a Conservation Biology major and a minor in Japanese. Before becoming a teacher Darren travelled the world for 4 years and worked as an Ecologist in Australia. After attaining a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning from Charles Darwin University and a Diploma in Teaching English as Second Language he began his teaching career as a specialist Japanese teacher in Adelaide, Australia. His first international school experience was in Dili, Timor Leste. From Timor-Leste, he moved to Istanbul with his Turkish wife (who attended MEF as a high school student). They now have a one-year-old son, who keeps him very busy at home. In his spare time, his passions are SCUBA diving and cycling. He has been at MEF International school for 2 years, teaching grade 4. Darren is very passionate about the Primary years Programme and ensuring that students have fun when learning through real-world experiences. He is looking forward to working with the MEF International School community in his new role.

Secondary Academic Dean

Angela Lucca is the Academic Dean for MEF IS Secondary School. Since the start of her teaching career, she has been able to build upon her skills and develop as an enthusiastic, effective and highly motivated teacher who strongly believes in teamwork, continuous professional development and cognitive empathy. She has over 17 years of teaching experience in Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary School and took on various leadership positions such as IB DP Coordinator, MYP HSE/Language B leader, DP ATL/TOK Coordinator, Head of English Department, Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Head of International Teachers, Europe Day Coordinator. Alongside with her school roles, Angela has become an IBEN Educator and has been trained to lead Diploma Programme’s Theory of Knowledge, Language B, Coordination and ATLs workshops. In addition to her B.A. in Foreign Languages and Civilizations, Angela Lucca has a M.Ed. in Curriculum Design and Advanced Teaching of Italian Language and Culture, a certificate to teach Italian in Primary School and she is a CELTA certified teacher (CELTA + CELTA Young Learners Extension). She is an Italian who was born in Belgium, has lived in Germany and is currently based in Turkey. Having spent most of her life abroad, Angela had the opportunity to travel the world, live in four different countries and learn five foreign languages. In her free time, she loves to travel, cook, read and play tennis.
