Employment FAQs

When does the recruitment process begin?

Our recruitment process begins in December of each year. Our vacancies are advertised on our website along with the recruitment agencies we work with. We advertise with TIE online and Search Associates.

I received a job offer from your school - is it real?

Unfortunately, there are many scams around at present. Any offer made from MEF International School will only be made after at least 2 face to face interviews, in person where possible, or over Skype. Reference checks will be made, and only after a positive outcome will an offer of employment be made. All offer employments will be made from an official school email address which has “@mefis.k12.tr” as the extension. Please contact us if you are ever in doubt.

When are new teachers expected to start school?

New teachers are expected to start school a week before returning teachers, usually early to mid-August of each year. We use this period to give you as much information as possible about MEF IS, and also help you adjust to the city, get settled, and finalise any outstanding paperwork.

What qualifications do I need to work at MEF IS?

The Ministry of Education in Turkey requires that all teachers have an undergraduate degree in the area in which they will be teaching. This means that for a homeroom or class teacher, they will need a four year undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. If a teacher has an undergraduate degree in any other area, but a master’s degree in the area to be taught, a letter from the Ministry of Education will be sought which needs to show at least 2 years of teaching experience in the same area of specialisation. The Human Resources department will help assist this process and provide you with information about documentation that is needed for approval.

Is there any kind of experience that is an advantage?

Yes. We are a regulated Cambridge International Centre and offer the Cambridge International curriculum from Y1-13 including Checkpoint, IGCSE, AS and A levels. Learning in Primary and Early Years is supplemented with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Experience in teaching in these areas is an advantage. However, if you do not have experience in these areas your application can still be considered – we will look out for experience in local and international schools, and also with active learning and inquiry based teaching methodologies.

What documents do I need to send with my application?

  • Letter of application
  • CV
  • Copy of your Bachelor degree and relevant transcript
  • Copy of your Master and/or doctorate degree (if any)
  • Copy of your Teaching certificate
  • Reference letters (at least 2)

Do I need a work permit to work in Turkey?

Yes, the Human Resources Coordinator will guide you through the process of getting a work permit before you arrive in Turkey. It can be a lengthy process, but the process needs to be completed and your work permit approved before you arrive. You will be supported each step of the way.

Do you accept direct applications or must I apply through an agency?

We accept applications directly to our school through the recruitment@mefis.k12.tr email address.

Is there an age limit for applying?

We invite applications from candidates who are 60 years of age or less.

I am a new teacher, can I apply for a teaching position?

We require at least 3 years teaching experience in your field of expertise.

Do I have to be able to speak the local language?
