Happy New Year to our families from MEF International School.

Despite the bad weather this week there were some gaps in the rain which enabled our students out for some fresh air. Please remember to send your children dressed appropriately for the weather, as we would like students to play outside whenever possible. Here are some of our very cute Pre-School students modelling the appropriate dress for this time of year.

The Primary Talent Show will be held on January 17th 2020, from 8:30 - 10:00 am, in the large auditorium. The purpose of the Talent Show is to give Kindergarten to Grade 5 students a chance to show their talents. Everyone is welcome.

This week some of our Grade 4s have been debating controversial topics such as, 'Is it ethical to keep wild animals as pets?' with our English Language teacher, Ms Marzhan.

As part of our commitment to Safeguarding, during Ms Pelin's PSE lessons our students have been learning what it means to be "safe" and "unsafe", and what the early warning signs are of feeling unsafe. Here are some examples of Grade 3 students’ work from PSE lessons.

This week Grade 5 are starting their new Unit of Inquiry, ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’. Here are some of the students sharing their initial wonderings about this unit. |

As part of this year’s whole school focus on Wellbeing, we are very pleased to be able to include a Mindfulness Club to next semester’s Primary in-school club offerings. Thank you to Ms Perrin and Ms W for offering this club. |

Thanks to Ms Donna we will also be offering Geometric Art next Semester. Please look out for the email regarding next semester’s clubs and make sure that you sign up your child as soon as possible. |

This week Grade 2 have been putting their knowledge of measurement into action by measuring items in their classroom. |
|
Our General Manager, Mr. Erdoğan Bozdemir, and the Mayor of Beşiktaş Municipality, Mr. Rıza Akpolat, signed an “Environmental Transformation Protocol” in order to reduce the waste impact on the environment and provide maximum benefit from recyclable materials. Within the scope of this project, a compost machine was presented to our school community. The organic wastes from our cafeterias and kitchens will now be converted into fertilizer with this device, and the compost obtained will be used for soil enrichment in parks and gardens in the Beşiktaş Municipality. |

The Secondary School Student Council hosted a Winter Carnival before Winter Break with fun activities like gingerbread cookie decorating, karaoke, New Year's resolution writing, marshmallow pong, pin-the-nose on Rudolph, and more. |
|
A fabulous end to the year: The Secondary School Student Council organized our annual Student Talent Show before Winter Break. Performers astounded the audience with their singing, dancing, and instrument playing. It was a great showcase of the many talents we hold at MEF IS. |
|
Just prior to the Winter Break representatives from the International Office at Medipol University Istanbul, Hacı Halim Kurumehmet and Fatma Nesibe Doymuş, visited the MEF IS campus and spoke with interested high school students at the “Uni Rep Table” near the CCD Office. They were pleased with the interest expressed by a range of students and are looking forward to returning for a future visit! |

In addition to the annual student Talent Show, the senior students auctioned some special services to raise money for their end-of-year trip. Services on offer included personal assistance, baked goods, babysitting services, food from different countries, and piano and violin lessons. There are more services on offer, which will be auctioned at the next assembly. |

As an introduction to Sculpture, 6th grade students practiced their engineering skills in Art class by working in groups to build towers out of paper and tape. |
|
7th graders have begun a unit on Digital Art by learning some photography techniques, including point-of-view, rule of thirds, and lighting tricks. |
|
Secondary students started exams on Thursday. The exams will run through Tuesday next week. |
