Head of School

Figen Sonmez is the Head of School for MEF International School, Istanbul and Izmir campuses. Figen was born and raised in Australia with a Turkish heritage. She studied at the University of Western Sydney, Nepean in Primary Education. She is currently studying to complete her Masters degree in Learning Sciences at MEF University. Figen has worked in a variety of positions in educational fields including homeroom teaching and Technology Teacher training, and leadership posts including Department Head roles, Curriculum Coordinator, Principal and Head of School. She is passionate about internationalism, learning, and nurturing the whole child – focussing on a balanced approach through developing academic, social, emotional and social potentials. Figen has three children enrolled at MEF IS who absolutely love their school.

Principal Izmir

Ulfet Okbay is from the UK and is of Cypriot heritage. After gaining a Bachelor of Education in Mathematics from The University of the West of England,  she started teaching mathematics in Bristol and later moved to Turkey. She has a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Bilkent University and is part way through her PhD from the same university. Ulfet has worked in several private schools in Izmir, Istanbul and Ankara and has held positions such as Mathematics teacher, Head of Mathematics, Middle School Principal and International School Director. She was also a part time teacher-trainer at Bilkent Graduate School of Education. She is passionate about education and believes all students are able to achieve success with the right support and teaching methods. Furthermore, she believes that education has to be about developing the 21st century skills of students so that they can adapt to the ever changing world.

Deputy Principal (Secondary School) Izmir

Edria Murray is from New Zealand. She studied Mathematics and Physics  at Massey University before completing a graduate diploma in Education and graduate Diploma in Information technology in Education from Canterbury University.  Edria has taught Physics, Mathematics, Combined science and Information and communications technology. She has also held leadership roles as curriculum coordinator and Deputy Principal and completed her Masters in Educational leadership from the University of Waikato.  Edria is invested in the development and success of secondary students to enable them to be active participants in the global community.

She has two children currently attending MEF IS Izmir.

Deputy Principal (Primary School) Izmir

Sara Borgarelli is from Italy. She studied Modern Foreign Languages at the IULM University of Milan and has a Masters degree in Simultaneous Conference Interpreting from the University Of Westminster, London. She also has a PGCE in Languages that allowed her to start teaching in the UK. Sara has taught Spanish and French in both Primary and Secondary sections at MEF IS Izmir; she has also held a variety of roles, from Secondary Curriculum Coordinator to Primary Curriculum Coordinator, and is currently serving as Primary Deputy Principal and Events Organizer.  Sara is a trained First Aider and has at heart her students’ physical, socio-emotional and academic wellbeing. She has two children currently attending Upper Secondary at MEF IS Izmir.
